Giant Monster by Steve Niles5/26/2023 The schizophrenic results may not satisfy anyone entirely. There are always risks involved when going in different directions. The premise may have forced his hand toward satire. It's debatable whether Niles should have played it straight. The plot does have intriguing elements though there are too many lengthy and redundant action scenes centering on the monster attacking everything and anything in sight. Many may consider the glibness more appealing and should take prominence, but the wit must be sharp or the project can collapse. It's a slippery slope when you combine gravity with levity, as the humor will override other aspects of the story, diminishing whatever substantial aspirations it embraced. Ironic it would come in a book featuring some of Niles best writing. This shift in tone was likely inevitable and part of the plan due to the silly premise. The story starts on a serious note involving a space pilot and the consequences befalling him before transitioning into a light hearted mode, aided and abetted by two wise cracking kids. This melding of styles isn't new to Niles, his Dead She Said incorporated horror with noir. This time he takes a page from 30 Days of Night partner Ben Templesmith and dispenses humor ala Gentleman Corpse. Steve Niles is at it again and doing what he fancies best, horror.

Ice blue by anne stuart5/26/2023 The mysterious Takashi O’Brien comes to her rescue. But she learns the hard way the Shirosama doesn’t play fair when it comes to getting what he wants when she’s kidnapped from the museum where the bowl is on display. She just knows there’s no way she’s forking over the bowl to the creepy crackpot. Summer doesn’t know his reasons, of course. While the bowl holds great sentimental value to Summer, it holds even greater meaning to the fanatical Shirosama, who plans to use it in a ceremony to spark a global apocalypse, purging evil from the world. Then her flaky mother falls under the spell of the Shirosama, head of Hollywood’s latest fad religion, the True Realization Fellowship. The nanny was killed shortly afterward, and the bowl remained in Summer’s possession, one of her most cherished belongings. When Summer Hawthorne was a child, her beloved Japanese nanny gave her a beautiful ice blue bowl to look after until she returned. It’s kind of a mess, but an agreeable one. The third in Anne Stuart’s Ice series, it’s not as good as the first book, Black Ice, but much better than the second, Cold As Ice. Oddly enough, although I thought Ice Blue suffered from a number of problems, I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Shattered Dreams by Sally Wentworth5/26/2023 I would not have been surprised if the "coachload of campanologists" referred to in chapter three, had played a bigger role than they did.Īs I said, this is the weirdest one I've read to date. Police interrogation methods including putting the girl in the glare of a bright light, twisting arms, locking and bolting doors and windows, nearly drowning her in the pool to make a point, and the list goes on. This is one of those harlequins that has a 'hero' who is all force and determination displaying both a sadistic, cruel, insane, obsessive, over the top personality and the methods to match to make sure the heroine is utterly degraded and abused into convincing herself that she 'loves' him and he 'loves' her. If you're looking for romance, as in violins and moonlight and true love and hearts and doves and such, don't read this. This is the weirdest harlequin I ever read.

Mr bennet pride and prejudice5/26/2023 īorn to a father who is described as "illiterate and miserly", the son, William Collins is not much better '(sans the miser part)'. Unless Mr Bennet has a son (which he and Mrs Bennet have no expectation of), the estate of £2,000-per-annum will pass to Mr Collins. The property is entailed to heirs male, meaning that Mr Bennet's daughters and their issue cannot inherit after Mr. Mr William Collins, 25 years old as the novel begins, is Mr Bennet's distant cousin, a clergyman, and the heir presumptive to Mr Bennet's estate of Longbourn. Mr Collins is also somewhat comparable to the Shakespearean character, Malvolio, from Twelfth Night. His dull-witted character is in parallel to another 'Austen' character, Mr. Mr Collins is first introduced during his visit to Longbourn. Since Mr and Mrs Bennet have no sons, Mr Collins is also the current heir presumptive to the Bennet family estate of Longbourn in Meryton, Hertfordshire, due to the estate being entailed to heirs male. He is the distant cousin of Mr Bennet, a clergyman and holder of a valuable living at the Hunsford parsonage near Rosings Park, the estate of his patroness Lady Catherine De Bourgh, in Kent. Mr William Collins is a fictional character in the 1813 novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.

These Old Shades by Georgette Heyer5/25/2023 I'm finding it so frustrating that I am abandoning this long awaited audiobook and will finish the tale on kindle. I could deal with the strange accents to differentiate the characters, even though I'm sure the nobility of that era spoke in a more refined manner, but the poor French is inexcusable, as it is totally confusing as to the actual meaning of so much of the text, as I am hearing totally different words to those written and spend a lot of the story trying to discern what is actually meant. This mangling of so much of the dialogue and narrative spoils the whole experience. For example, not only do we have the schoolboy " moossier" for "monsieur" at frequent intervals, but also slips such as " jeune fille" (young girl) which is pronounced as "jaune fille" (yellow girl). But the French pronunciation is appalling. There are a few English mispronounciations such as "crookEd arm" pronounced as if the poor appendage was strangely distorted rather than crook'd and with a very irritating repetition of "ay" rather than "a".
