Giant Monster by Steve Niles5/26/2023 ![]() The schizophrenic results may not satisfy anyone entirely. There are always risks involved when going in different directions. The premise may have forced his hand toward satire. It's debatable whether Niles should have played it straight. ![]() ![]() The plot does have intriguing elements though there are too many lengthy and redundant action scenes centering on the monster attacking everything and anything in sight. Many may consider the glibness more appealing and should take prominence, but the wit must be sharp or the project can collapse. It's a slippery slope when you combine gravity with levity, as the humor will override other aspects of the story, diminishing whatever substantial aspirations it embraced. Ironic it would come in a book featuring some of Niles best writing. This shift in tone was likely inevitable and part of the plan due to the silly premise. The story starts on a serious note involving a space pilot and the consequences befalling him before transitioning into a light hearted mode, aided and abetted by two wise cracking kids. ![]() ![]() This melding of styles isn't new to Niles, his Dead She Said incorporated horror with noir. This time he takes a page from 30 Days of Night partner Ben Templesmith and dispenses humor ala Gentleman Corpse. Steve Niles is at it again and doing what he fancies best, horror. ![]()
