The 1962 book Capitalism and Freedom is Friedman’s magnum opus, laying out his theoretical interpretation of liberalism as best achieved through free market economics, and advocating a set of policies including a volunteer military, abolition of medical licenses, a negative income tax and school choice. Enduring in its eminence and esteem, it has sold nearly a million copies in English, has been translated into eighteen languages, and continues to inform economic thinking and policymaking around the world. As an advisor to President Ronald Reagan as well as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s, Friedman advocated for minimal government intervention, believing that free market (laissez-faire) capitalism was the best and only way to maximize human liberty. First published in 1962, Friedman’s Capitalism and Freedom is one of the most significant works of economic theory ever written. He and Friedrich August von Hayek, his mentor and colleague, emphasize the importance of. This is one of the more technical and difficult chapters of the book because monetary policy is the focus of Friedman's own research. In his lifetime, he lead a very successful campaign against the preeminent Keynesian school of economics, which, like John Dewey and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, envisioned a large role for the government in society. He acknowledges the past and present as a way of alluding to the promise of the future. Throughout this piece, King engages with themes of freedom, justice, and the future. ![]() He also says that the Black community will never be satisfied until they are granted full and equal rights with white Americans. He says that the United States needs to make immediate changes, or the protests will only heighten. ![]() The phrase “I have a dream” is used numerous times throughout the piece. But, in American today, freedom hasn’t been achieved. Constitution and Declaration of Independence, reminding all those listening that America is supposed to be the land of the free. Now, he stated, still, “the Negro is…not free.” He also references the U.S. ![]() That is the speech that freed the slaves in 1863, one hundred years in the past. In the first lines of this famed speech, King discusses the Emancipation Proclamation.
