Enduring in its eminence and esteem, it has sold nearly a million copies in English, has been translated into eighteen languages, and continues to inform economic thinking and policymaking around the world. As an advisor to President Ronald Reagan as well as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s, Friedman advocated for minimal government intervention, believing that free market (laissez-faire) capitalism was the best and only way to maximize human liberty. First published in 1962, Friedman’s Capitalism and Freedom is one of the most significant works of economic theory ever written. He and Friedrich August von Hayek, his mentor and colleague, emphasize the importance of. This is one of the more technical and difficult chapters of the book because monetary policy is the focus of Friedman's own research. In his lifetime, he lead a very successful campaign against the preeminent Keynesian school of economics, which, like John Dewey and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, envisioned a large role for the government in society. Chapter 3 begins Friedman 's treatment of specific, concrete policy issues. Milton Friedman (1912-2006) was an economist and Nobel laureate who continues to greatly influence economic theory and policy.
